People with Support.

If someone you know is thinking about suicideyour actions can make a difference.

Notice

  • Know the signs of suicide and take them seriously
  • Even one is enough to pause, check in, and offer support.

Ask

  • Let them know you care and are there for them.
  • It’s OK to be direct. Ask them, Are you thinking about suicide?”
    • Asking this question does not create suicidal thoughts or behavior, but it can let them know theyre not alone and that help is available.

Listen

  • Listen with compassion and without judgment.
  • If they say theyre thinking about suicidestay calm.
  • When talking about suicide, feeling heard can reduce suicidal thoughts and remind them they’re not alone.

Connection is Prevention

  • Connect them with the 988 Native & Strong Lifeline where counselors provide free, confidential support to people struggling with mental health. You can also help your loved one reach out to a friend, trusted relative, spiritual advisor or other mental health professional.

What to Expect When You Call, Text or Chat

When you contact the Native & Strong Lifeline, you’ll be connected with a non-judgmental, trained Native counselor who listens with care and understanding.

Native & Strong Lifeline counselors will begin by sharing their tribal affiliation, so you know you’re speaking with a caring relative—someone who understands the importance of culture, community, and connection. You can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable.

Available 24/7, 365 days a year, the Native & Strong Lifeline is free and confidential for anyone seeking emotional support or guidance for themselves, a friend, or loved one. Whether you’re facing an urgent situation, feeling overwhelmed, or simply needing someone to talk to, you can always reach a Native counselor by calling 988 and pressing 4, or texting N8V to 988 to chat.
